Examining Desire

A practice inspired by Epicurus

When we're caught in wanting, everything feels urgent. We need this. We'll be happy when we have it. We can't imagine life without it.

This simple practice creates space between you and the wanting — a chance to see the desire clearly, without being run by it.

Four questions. A few minutes. A little more freedom.

Step 1 of 5

Name the Desire

What are you longing for right now?

Step 2 of 5

If You Get It

Your desire

What will happen to you if this is accomplished or possessed? How will you feel? What will change?

Step 3 of 5

If You Don't Get It

Your desire

What will happen if this is not accomplished or possessed? What do you fear? What would you lose?

Step 4 of 5

Happiness Without It

Your desire

If you didn't have this, how else might you be happy?

Step 5 of 5

Having It All

Your desire

Imagine you have this. What could still make you miserable?

What we chase often glitters. What we need is usually simpler — a friend, a calm mind, a body that works, time that's our own. The longing doesn't disappear. But perhaps it's lighter now — no longer the whole story.
